Q&A With Legal Assistant, Shirley Mejia

Meet Shirley Mejia. She is our legal assistant and most likely the first person you will come in contact with at Matthew Pillado PLLC. Shirley does many tasks throughout the day. From keeping cases organized and monitoring calendars to meeting important deadlines and answering our client's questions, it's safe to say that she is the backbone of this firm.

The attorneys and pretty much everyone depend on Shirley. She is your go-to person when something needs to get done. But like you, me, and everyone else Shirley is a regular person. We asked Shirley a few questions about herself. This is what she had to say:

Shirley, what do you like to do in your free time?

I like to keep it basic. If I could watch Netflix and rest all day, I totally would. But I also enjoy reading articles and writing short stories when I have the opportunity.

What's it like working for both a Criminal Defense and Personal Injury firm?

Let just say it's... interesting. Some days can be crazier than others. I never know what to expect. Having a combination of both keeps me and everyone else pretty busy. I really do enjoy my job though. I love learning something new every day and being able to help our clients in some way is super rewarding.

Who would you say is your biggest motivator?

My biggest motivator I would definitely say is my mom. She is the one person who has always pushed me to do the absolute best in life. Without her, I honestly wouldn't be the person I am today. She never stops believing in me and constantly tells me that with faith and hard work I can accomplish anything.

What made you want to apply to law school?

I have always been pretty involved in my community. Because of that, I realized that some people just need that second chance to simply live a better and healthier life. Things happen and sometimes we make choices that we are not proud of but that does not mean we should be barred from a fair shot at making a better version of ourselves.

(Shirley plans to attend Law School this upcoming fall and hopes to practice Criminal Defense one day.)

What are you most excited about for the future?

That's a tough one - life happens. I see myself as someone who lives in the moment. One thing I am excited about is starting my dream career and having a family one day. But like I said, life's a trip. I can't predict the future but whatever happens, happens. But when it does happen, I'll be ready for it.

There you have it, folks - not all heroes wear capes. Thanks, Shirley for all that you do at the firm.
