Long Texas roads are often filled with busy truckers trying to meet their scheduling demands. Unfortunately, many drivers in both the trucks and cars of all sizes and shapes are at danger of a truck jackknifing on the road. Trucks that get flipped on their side, while sliding at maximum speeds cause extreme danger to everyone around them.

When you know why trucks are susceptible to jackknife on the road, you can stay extra cautious during these types of conditions. Victims suffer numerous types of injuries because of a skidding truck accident.

Here are the three major reasons why a truck will jackknife:

  • Losing traction grip - 18-wheelers that lose traction on the road are at the highest risk of jackknifing while in motion. The loss of grip from the tire to the asphalt causes total loss of control and instability while trying to manage speed and balance of turns and truckloads.
  • Incorrectly braking - Truckers who brake incorrectly are at a high danger for causing their vehicle to take a tumble. Actively locking the brakes on a tractor-trailer will cause the vehicle to flip from the extreme stop of motion.
  • Speed and sharp turns - The combination of taking a sharp turn at a high speed will cause a truck to turn over on its side. It is extremely important that vehicles of large capacity slow down on winding roads, curves and sharp turns.

As a regular commuter, you need to watch for these signs as you drive. Sharing the road with large tractor-trailers is intimidating for new and old drivers alike. However, you can reduce the chances of experiencing an accident when you are aware of what increases the likelihood of truck collisions. Always stay alert and aware of your changing surroundings while driving.
