It's Distracted Driving Awareness Month in Texas

distracted driving new .pngTexas has more miles of road than any other state. For this and many other reasons, we should be leading the nation in traffic safety. Unfortunately, too many drivers in Texas are putting themselves and others in danger nearly every time they get behind the wheel.

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. In recognition of the event, AAA Texas has launched its own safety campaign about the dangers of texting, cellphone use and other distractions drivers face. With public service announcements and media releases, the organization is urging: "Don't Drive Intoxicated - Don't Drive Intexticated."

Most of us would never think of driving drunk. Yet in many cases, distracted driving can be just as dangerous. Studies have shown that texting while driving makes you up to eight times more likely to be involved in a crash. Using a handheld cellphone is not much safer, making you up to four times more likely to crash.

According to the Texas DOT statistics from 2018, there were 95,639 crashes on Texas roads last year attributed to distracted driving. These crashes resulted in 394 deaths and countless injuries.

The first thing that needs to change about distracted driving is public attitudes. Most people know and accept the dangers of distracted driving when others do it, but somehow think that they are the exception to the rule.

If you or a loved one has been seriously injured by a distracted driver, you should fully understand your legal rights and options for compensation. Please discuss your case with an experienced personal injury attorney in your area.
